How to Choose the Right Provider for Your Texas Insurance License Exam Prep Course.

First, disqualify any company that claims its General Lines Agent or Public Adjuster license exam prep courses are "TDI-Approved." That is a false, misleading claim. They don't deserve your trust—or your money.

The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) does not regulate General Lines Agent or Public Adjuster pre-licensing education. Period.

In many other states, you must complete an "approved course" from an "approved provider" before you can sit for an exam. But not in Texas.

The Law: Texas Insurance Code: §4001.105

According to the Texas Insurance Code § 4001.105, these are the only requirements to apply for a Texas General Lines Agent license:

✦ Age: Being at least 18 years of age.

✦ Testing: Passing the state licensing examination and applying within 12 months.

✦ Background: Not having committed an act that is grounds for denial or license revocation.

✦ Fees: Submitting the application and paying the required state fees.

Texas law does not say a single word about taking an "approved pre-licensing course" from an "approved provider" because no such requirement exists. Anyone with $49 can log onto Pearson VUE (the state vendor website), book an appointment, and take the exam 24 hours later. Any provider claiming TDI certifies their P&C, Life/Health, or Public Adjuster prep material or course is entirely fake.

The Cheat: How They Mislead You.

If TDI doesn't approve exam prep, why do companies claim they do? They resort to deceptive tactics:

✦ Some just lie and say they are "approved" when they know are not.

✦ The CE Bait-and-Switch: Ongoing Continuing Education (CE) is strictly regulated by the state. Licensed agents must complete 24 hours of approved CE every two years to renew their license. Providers who offer both Exam Prep and CE will intentionally blur the lines, blasting "State-Approved Courses" across their whole website without distinguishing between the two.

✦ The Adjuster Confusion: This is where shady providers trick you with legal half-truths. The state of Texas does approve 40-hour pre-licensing courses for All-Lines Adjusters, which allows them to bypass the state exam entirely. However, this exemption only applies to All-Lines Adjusters. The state does not provide that option for Public Adjusters—they are legally required to pass the official state exam just like agents.

✦ Shady providers lump everything together, knowing you won't notice.
